Some time ago we were writing about European Wisents. Today we give some information about his cousin - Zubron (pol.Żubroń) - hybrid of domestic cattle and wisent.
Zubron was bred in 1847 by Polish scientist Leopold Walicki. He crossed wisent male with cattle female. Till 1859 he bred about 15 Zubrons. HIs work was continued later in ZSRR. Main purpose of this scientific research was to create hybrid which could be bread on wastelands without need to build any stable buildings.
What is interesting, name "Żubroń" was given to this animal after almost hundred years later. The newspaper "Przekroj" organized contest for the best name for hybrid and the Zubron won with few hundreds other propositions.
Male Zubron weight about 1200 kg and female about 800g. They are pretty strong, resistant to disase and hard living conditions. Main problem with hybrids is that, males in first generation are sterile.
